We often assume our GI Tract has the sole purpose of digestion and food processing when in fact, it goes much deeper than that. Our gut controls much of our being and intertwines with our minds, emotions, and overall being. To understand the importance of digestion, we must first grasp the complexity of the digestive system. From the moment we take that first bite, an orchestrated series of events begins. The journey starts in the mouth, where enzymes in saliva begin to break down carbohydrates. Chewing initiates mechanical digestion, turning food into a more manageable form.
Once swallowed, food travels down the esophagus and into the stomach, where gastric juices further break it down into a semi-liquid substance called chyme. From there, it enters the small intestine, where the majority of nutrient absorption occurs. Enzymes from the pancreas and bile from the liver are secreted to assist in this process.
As the nutrients are absorbed, they enter the bloodstream and are transported throughout the body, fueling various bodily functions. What remains, indigestible waste, continues its journey through the large intestine until it is ultimately expelled.
Sounds simple enough, right? No. It’s not as simple as one, two, three.
